Jackson Wyoming—a real
treat for the senses, in fact every time we visit the Jackson area we
are prone to have sensual overload. Your first glimpse of the beauty of
this area is when you are on approach to Jackson International Airport.
As the awesome rugged beauty of the Teton Mountains looms outside of
your plane windows, your breath will be momentarily taken away. It is a
beautiful drive from the airport to Jackson. You’ll drive through a
gorgeous valley, teeming with animals that take the breath of an
easterner, who is not accustomed to seeing big game animals, such as
Elk, Bison, Moose, and the star of the wildlife show, the Grizzly Bear.
As you travel into Jackson, you travel through a beautiful valley, which
is called Jackson Hole. The magnificent Teton Mountains are so close you
will think you can reach out and touch them at times.
As you continue your
short drive into Jackson, you pass through the National Elk Refuge where
thousands of Elk migrate down from the high country in the winter. Along
this route you will also see abundant creeks, rivers, and wetlands where
waterfowl such as ducks, geese, and the rare Trumpeter Swan congregate
on their migration in both fall and spring. On the outskirts of Jackson
you will find the National Wildlife Art Museum which will only be the
first of many opportunities to see paintings, sculpture, and wonderful
photography because Jackson abounds with art galleries.
One of the must see
places in downtown Jackson is the park. The entrance is an arch framed
with Elk antlers. In the spring of the year an antler auction is held
for the benefit of local charities which draw bidders from around the
world. The antlers are collected from the Elk Refuge, which you pass on
your way to town. Make plans to be there, a good time is had by all.
Speaking of a good
time, after you have taken your pictures under the Antler Arch, walk
across the street to the million dollar cowboy bar and have a seat on
one of the bar stools topped with a western saddle and have yourself an
adult beverage or three.
On around the corner
you will find shopping galore lots of fine restaurants for your dining
pleasure. Jackson is very pedestrian friendly with adequate handicap
access.
Don’t miss Jackson and
the surrounding country; it is some of the most delightful on earth. |
