Baton Rouge or the “Red Stick” to residents of this central
Louisiana city is the capitol of the state and is within four hours
of any destination in Louisiana. The city is located on the banks of
the mighty Mississippi River and is a docking port for the
paddlewheel riverboats which ply the Mississippi and cruise from New
Orleans.
Baton Rouge offers many attractions for visitors including the U.S.S.
Kidd, a World War II Destroyer which survived many battles and
attacks including some of the kamikaze attacks which the Japanese
were notorious for. The U.S.S. Kidd is berthed directly across from
the Old State Capitol, which has been completely restored to its
former glory and is open to visitors. Louisiana and the Baton Rouge
area offer many historic homes and estates which are a pleasure to
visit. There are many plantations with antebellum, and Greek revival
homes in this area of the state and if you have an opportunity to
visit some of them don’t pass up your chance. |

Being the Capitol of the state brings many
people, and high paying jobs, to the community and is a huge part of the
local economy. The new state capitol building, which was started by the
famous governor Huey Long, has a wonderful observation deck which
overlooks the city and the Mississippi River. This is quite a sight.
Baton Rouge is home to colleges and universities, most notably Louisiana
State University and the Fighting Tigers. LSU is one of the leading
research universities in the nation and attracts students from all
corners of the world.
You can’t visit Baton Rouge without sampling some of the fabulous
cooking which this area is famous for. The wonderful seafood and the
Cajun dishes will make a rabbit slap a bear. The only problem with the
food here is when you are gone you can’t find any to compare so the only
solution is to return often.
With all the water which is in this area you can find fishing almost
anywhere. The rivers, streams, sloughs, and swamps all offer some of the
best fresh water fishing anywhere in the United States. Lunker Bass are
a common catch and it is only a short drive to enjoy some excellent
Trout and Redfish angling.
The state of Louisiana offers the premiere destination for duck hunters,
all species seem to migrate through here or winter here because of the
abundant food sources which farmers provide for them. There are numerous
plantations which cater to hunters, so if waterfowling is your sport
this should be your first choice for a delightful trip. Y’all come on
down this is a great place to visit. |
