Less than one hundred
miles from Atlanta is one of the prettiest little mountain towns you
will ever find. Hiawassee’s setting is gorgeous: a small mountain valley
surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and Lake Chatuge. The scenery is
impossible to improve upon. You can while away many days sitting on a
porch and admiring the endless beauty of the surrounding mountains.
Besides the beautiful landscape in and around Hiawassee, one of the most
popular attractions is the Georgia Mountain Fair. Thousands of
spectators flock to the fairgrounds each year for the fair. The
fairgrounds have a campground which is directly on Lake Chatuge and the
fair and other shows, such as the fiddlers, get together and Blue Grass
festivals draw fans from all over the United States. The fairgrounds
have a state of the art building with wonderful acoustics for the
performers and comfortable seating for the visitors, so you may enjoy
the shows in ease no matter what the weather is like outside. The fair
has displays, artifacts and demonstrations that depict the lifestyle of
the folks who resided in these rugged mountain areas in years past. You
will enjoy visiting the fair and getting a glimpse of how difficult the
everyday lives of our ancestors were. You will be able to sample some
mountain delicacies such as home made biscuits, wild honey, fruit
preserves, jellies, and boiled peanuts. You are still in Georgia, so
enjoy.
Hiawassee offers the typical Blue Ridge Mountain scenery of soaring
peaks, mist covered waterfalls, beautiful mountain streams, and wildlife
which seems to appear to entertain you at just the time you need it
most.
One of the things which the state of Georgia should be most proud of is
their state park system which is great and this area is no exception.
Between Hiawassee and the town of Young Harris in a beautiful mountain
valley they have a new park complete with a golf course and a lodge
which is breathtaking. In this area there are numerous parks some with
lake access and others with mountain vistas, so whatever you enjoy,
Georgia has provided it for you.
You are only a leisurely mountain drive from other pretty little
mountain towns and villages such as Dahlonega, with its rich history of
gold mining, Helen the alpine village of Georgia, Blairsville, or
Franklin, North Carolina.
For your dining pleasure you will find many restaurants here in the
mountains that serve nothing but the best food you have ever tasted and
there is a wide variety of choices.
Lodging is very plentiful and you can choose from nice Bed and
Breakfasts or many hotels, motels and resorts. |
