Dahlonega is to Georgia
what Sutter Creek is to California: the beginning of the gold rush. The
Georgia gold rush began and ended in Dahlonega and the surrounding
county. Dahlonega is home to the largest gold deposits east of the
Mississippi River and mining began in 1828, when gold was so plentiful
people picked it up on top of the ground. While visiting Dahlonega you
may try your hand panning for that invaluable nugget of your dreams.
They are still found here on a regular basis by the hearty souls who
keep looking for their fortunes. There are two mines that are open and a
working stamp mill.
Today Dahlonega attracts more tourists than potential gold miners,
simply because it is a delightful town to visit, with its beautifully
restored brick buildings that now hold such things as a museum that
traces the Georgia gold rush with articles and artifacts such as tools
used in that bygone era.
Dahlonega is a wonderful town to step back into the past. Stroll the
tree shaded streets while enjoying an old fashioned ice cream cone while
you walk around. There are many buildings that have been renovated and
now are shops and offices and restaurants and you will think you have
stepped back in time to a more quiet and peaceful time.
Dahlonega is located in northeast Georgia in the Blue Ridge Mountains a
short and pleasant drive from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta.
Dahlonega has some very interesting neighbors that are always worth a
visit when you are in this area, including Helen, Georgia, which is a
short and beautiful mountain drive away. Helen is a very popular tourist
destination with its Swiss Chalet architecture and Germanic influences.
Hiawassee, Georgia is another beautiful mountain town that hosts the
Georgia Mountain Fair, which is a real pleasure to visit for folks of
all ages.
Dahlonega is situated in some gorgeous mountain scenery with streams
flowing along beside the road that will entice you to stop and dangle
your feet in the water and enjoy the cool breezes and listen to the
songbirds. Maybe that is why this region is becoming so popular to
retirees.
When you’ve had enough of gold mining and walking down the streets of
Dahlonega, you might visit the nearby Chattahoochee National Forest for
some of the finest scenery in the south. The forest offers the
opportunity for many outdoor activities including hiking, mountain
biking, canoeing, and just a short drive away some breathtaking white
water rafting. If you are a trout fishing fan this section of Georgia
offers some great opportunities to pursue the elusive trout in some of
the most picturesque settings that you will ever cast a fly.
This is a wonderful place to visit for a few days or for an extended
vacation. It is a great place to add to the memory bank. |
