Columbus, Georgia is
approximately 110 miles south of Atlanta and is famous as the
birthplace of Coca Cola, or at least the formula for coke. Columbus
is situated on the Chattahoochee River and has always been known as
a river city. The Chattahoochee River drives the industry in
Columbus just as it has since the days of King Cotton. Now the river
and the walk along its banks provide recreation to Columbus
residents and visitors all year as well. The river provides a
shipping channel all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Yes this is the
same Chattahoochee River immortalized by Allan Jackson the country
music megastar who grew up in this area of Georgia. Columbus is very
proud of its southern heritage and has a historic district which
stretches thirty blocks and has beautiful antebellum homes and
gardens which are delightful to visit.
Fort Benning is a huge infantry training and logistics center which
has been a large part of the Columbus economy for many years.
The Columbus area offers some of the best hunting and fishing to be
found in the southern United States. Trophy whitetail Deer are
abundant and hunting is one of the most popular pastimes in this
area. Quail hunting is still king of the outdoor pursuits in this
part of the world, numerous plantations are here just for the hunter
who enjoys the pursuit of this small bird which rockets out of cover
and is one of the most challenging targets which wing shooters ever
pursue. |

Many plantations still offer the mule
drawn wagons, horses, and fine gun dogs to shoot over just as it was
done before the turn of the century .For the sportsman this is truly a
wonderful experience.
For the avid fisherman Columbus offers outstanding bigmouth Bass and
pan-fish opportunities in the lakes and rivers which are nearby.
While in this area of Georgia be certain to visit Calloway Gardens,
which is thousands of acres of forests and has bike trails and roads
through them, lakes and streams, and gardens which are planted with
thousands of varieties of flowers and shrubs which are beautiful. A
visit in the spring will bring a view of azaleas in bloom which have
been planted over hundreds of acres, all colors of the rainbow, so
gorgeous you wish spring would never end.
Columbus offers fine dining, entertainment, and plentiful lodging so
visit soon. |
