A historic
southern city describes Albany, Georgia. Albany today is a vibrant
growing city which is a hub for transportation, shopping, and education.
Situated along the Flint River where Creek Indians were the first known
settlers of what is now Albany. This site was chosen for the city
because of the river and the opportunities which it offered for
transporting crops, such as cotton, to foreign markets. Today the Flint
River is the focal point for recreation, not transportation, with parks
and museums in the area along the river. It is a very enjoyable area to
while away many hours enjoying the beauty of the area. Albany is home to
a United States Marine Corps logistics base which adds substantially to
the economy of the area.
One of the music world’s greatest performers Mr. Ray Charles was a
native son of Albany, and went on to world wide fame as one of the
greatest performers of all time, his version of Georgia On My Mind is
now the state song, and no one can do this song like Ray Charles.
The Albany area is known as the Quail hunting capitol of the world.
There are numerous plantations in this area of Georgia which are quail
hunting preserves, properties set aside strictly for the preservation of
habitat for the elusive quail. Many of these plantations cater to
hunters from all over the country, providing world class lodges with all
the amenities which you will find only in the finest resorts. These
plantations provide everything a hunter could ask of a successful trip.
A large part of an enjoyable hunt is seeing a well trained bird dog work
in the field and these plantations have some of the best dogs in the
world. There is nothing more challenging than walking up behind a dog
which is holding point and kicking up a covey of quail. They burst
straight up into the air with the sound of a nest of rattlesnakes
rattling in your ears and hopefully you’ll be able to get your gun on
one bird and bring it down. If you have never tried this sport you owe
it to yourself to give it a try once. Caution though, it seems to be
addictive.
Albany offers some fine dining opportunities and some restaurants have
various quail dishes on their menus and it is everyone’s duty to sample
as many of these as you can hold. You won’t be sorry, they are
delicious. Visit Albany, this is a very enjoyable area. |
