Highlands
is one of those places which is off the beaten path, so to reach it you
have to be going there intentionally. Highlands is several miles off
busy highway 441, which has become the main artery for folks wanting to
enjoy the Blue Ridge Mountains. Highlands is for the person who enjoys
angle parking in the middle of the main street the same way it was done
when horses were the primary form of transportation, and people sit on
benches in front of businesses and discuss politics, children, and the
weather for as long as their heart desires Highlands is a beautiful old
town with good restaurants, small shops, bed and breakfasts, golf
courses, and trees that have shaded those well preserved houses for
hundreds of years.
Highlands was at one time the premiere destination of choice for wealthy
southerners to escape the hot, humid weather of the southeast in summer.
The summer weather in Highlands is simply delightful. Cool mornings and
evenings, and afternoons warm enough for outdoor activities to be
pleasant. The weather the rest of the year is fine also, but the fall is
absolutely terrific, and when you include the fall foliage, life just
doesn’t get any better than in Highlands.
Highlands is a neighbor of Sky Valley, a planned community for snow
skiers and golfers. One day when you are out for a drive, be sure to
stop by and check it out, for the scenery is excellent.
Franklin, North Carolina is a short drive through the mountains, notice
the through mountains part so don’t get in too big a hurry for that was
not the way these roads were designed. Franklin offers more shopping and
the downtown area is always a pleasure to visit because it is like
taking a step back through time.
It is a pleasant drive from Franklin over one mountain to Cherokee,
North Carolina, if you get a hankering to try your luck in the casino
which the Cherokee Indian Nation built in town.
Highlands offers some superb golfing opportunities, so if you enjoy golf
you have one more reason to visit.
Between the breathtaking mountain scenery, the golfing opportunities,
and the laid back atmosphere, Highlands is one of those places that you
will enjoy visiting and probably return time after time. Try it; you
will definitely enjoy your time in Highlands. |
