Fayetteville is home
to Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force base. Fort Bragg is the training
and deployment site of elite paratroopers such as the proud men of
the 82nd Airborne. Fort Bragg holds the distinction of being the
largest military installation in the world and has grown to this
size from a mere five thousand man base at the beginning of world
war two. It goes without saying which the economy of Fayetteville is
dependant upon Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base.
Fayetteville has several military themed museums but one of the
special attractions in Fayetteville is the Airborne and Special
Operations Museum which is a part of the United States Army museum
system. This museum tells the story of Army Airborne and Special
Operations from their inception in 1940 through today. The 59,000
square feet museum houses many artifacts including a C47 airplane
which has been suspended from the ceiling to give the visitor the
impression of flight. The museum also has other articles of interest
including a glider from the World War II era, along with a tank and
two helicopters, uniforms, equipment, and weapons from different
time periods.
Keep in mind the museum covers conflicts from WWII, Korea, Vietnam,
and Desert Storm. This is an attraction which everyone should visit
to get a first hand look at how our elite troops are trained and
what they do and what they have done on the battlefield. After your
visit here you will hold our troops in much higher esteem, and be
more thankful for their courage and sacrifices in protecting our
country. |

While in Fayetteville visit the Market
House, which is the focal point of downtown Fayetteville. Built in 1832
it is a unique structure in which for years local farmers sold their
produce beneath the arches of the building while the second floor was
the town hall. This is one of a very few public buildings in America to
use this combination, normally this is found only in England.
Because of the large population of soldiers and dependants in the
Fayetteville area they add to the demand for more restaurants, shopping,
and lodging so you have a wide selection to choose from. Fayetteville is
convenient to get into either by automobile or plane so take a break
from the normal destinations and give this area a look see. |
